Week 10:Exporting into DVD

After a week of testing and testing, we managed to export into DVD in a 720p format as that is the biggest resolution we can export. After viewing with Eric with a television, it seems to be alright because tv blur up all the grainy part and makes it looks good. Meanwhile, Aaron and team working on the new trailer of Darwin Festival to make it looks more professional and nicer, we were waiting for the final trailer to bring it in DVD studio pro to export the final one.

I found an interesting video about promotional video production and how it's a lot like making good sales letters. He reiterates the need to hook viewers with a good story. It gaves me a lot of new ideas of making a better promotional video. I have to think out of the box to make things more interesting not just follow the standard procedure of making a video.

Week 9: DVD studio pro

Aaron decides to works more with the editing size and asked me to help Keree and Jocelyn with their part. I have totally no idea with DVD studio Pro and I learn them at youtube as well, Eric asked them to make a SD (standard definition) version and create 3 templates for client to choose. They face a problem in choose the display mode and Eric asked Peter for suggestion as well, after that he made the decision in using 16:9 letter box.

In class, we showed Eric the video that mashup by Aaron's team, and found out many parts needed to be changed and edited. Especially the fun run part, I was not satisfy with the part they did and after a short discussion with Eric, I opened up the project file and started editing and rearranging the files again, Brooke came in that time and they were discussing the other parts. I finished the Fun Run part and showed to them after that, they like the changes I did because the arrangement are much nicer compared to the previous one.

Week 8: DVD production

After a short break, we are back for DVD production of Darwin Festival. Aaron and myself discussed with Eric how's the whole process gonna be and the details of everything. In group discussion, Keree and Jocelyn decided to work on dvd menu by using studio pro. Eric let them to study in Lynda.com using his account, and they did more research on youtube as well. Chris,XiaoJing and Jerry will be working on the video content to arrange them together.

Brooke came in the class together with Megan and we sit down together to decide which are and which not to be use in the full DVD video, we watch all the previous youtube video and decide on each part to be use. Aaron take notes down as a reference for editing. I kind of know whats Megan and Brooke thinking and I know what they like to be in the video, even though Aaron and myself were told not to do much on editing but letting the others doing it, but I couldn't stand it doing nothing and just pointing them to do this and that. I like editing very much and I like to have my hands on editing the final video as well.

I forget to blog on my last blog entries on my process of doing 3D promo video, after I get the footage from fun run and dancing on the sand, I passed the 3D cam to Eric as he will be taking footages at another event. He passed the Cam and SD card to me next day and I given a day time to finish up the video. I spend more than 5 hours in the editing room to finish up the video because he need it before 3pm next day. I couldn't finish at night because met some problems with the computer, I came back the next morning to continue my editing, I manage to export the final product in time and give it to Eric. He is happy after present it in one of the event and get enough survey from the audience.

Week 7: Kimisis & Fun Run Done

After we completed our Fun Run shooting, Keree and Chris went to the lab to copy the clips into FCP project and start arranging the video. I reach there later and I saw them struggling on editing because they are not experienced in editing video, I teach them from scratch which is choosing the files before start pulling them into the timeline, we look through all the video clips and removed all the unwanted scenes, by doing this we can make our editing phase faster because the clips are much organised. Next, create a plan of how you want to present the video, the feeling of the video, I ask them to arrange all the video by time. After that, I put the music in and start editing according to music, but after a while I felt something wrong with the whole music feel and the clips, the music does not bring up the fun feeling that I expect, so I decided to do something different which is using the live music as the background music. Starting off with the countdown then music and put live music along with the dances. It turned out really well and Eric & Megan love the style. After arrange all the clips in one piece, I passed the leftover job to Chris and Keree to put transition and export it.

I handed some help to Surge and Xiao Jing as they faced big problem in editing as well, they used the template and wanted to put every footage in but realise that they footage they taken are too dark and most of the part we barely see anything. Xiao Jing took the initiative to adjust the color and brightness of the clip and I help them in editing the music because its too long, and they do not have that many footage for that. Hope everything turn out well for them.

Week 6: Fun Run Shooting

Last week we have seen the Cantina groups youtube video, I love the style they edited and it is a nice combination with the music together. The only problem they faced is the low light condition, our jvc cam does not fits well in low light condition, so if we took a footage in a place that does not have enough light, it will cause the footage became grainy and bad. They did a lot of post editing, increase the brightness and colour correction to make the video looks better.

In the past week I also did some editing in 3D but it doesn't turns out well because lacking of shots, we only have shots from Cantina and some shots taken by Aaron, it is not enough to make a good 3D video. Eric suggested me that we could cover more event to fill up the gaps.

Yesterday, I went to Fun Run event for shooting together with Keree and Chris. We met Megan and Eric at there and as usual set up the tripod get ready for shooting. This time Keree also help out of taking video and its not easy to walk a to take a proper shots because it was too crowded, she did an amazing job by running around to get as much footage as possible.

I brought my steadycam and tried to use it for the first time with 3D cam, it turns out to be okay decrease the shakiness than holding the cam with our bare hands. I found out that 3D footages taken a big spaces in the SD cards, I keep deleted some not-so-useful shots to continue my shooting. Later, Eric wants me to go cover the Dancing on the Sand event and he passed me a new SD cards because mine fully used up. We walked there and I taken all the footage needed in about an hour time.

Week 5: First shooting

This week I joined group 2 (Keree & Chris) for their first shooting at The Amphitheatre 5 minutes away from the city. We went there 2 hours early to make sure we are ready for the shooting and set up our stuff. We met Megan, she given us pass for entering the place, after that she give us some idea of what we can shoot and what she expect from us.Then, Me and Chris went to take some footages while Keree take care all the stuffs. I directed Chris and teaches him what to shoot and how to shoot a good video. Myself handling the 3D cam to take some 3D footages as well.

We gathered ourselves infront of the entrance to take a timelapse shot of people coming in, we waited while putting the jvc on the tripod for about 10 minutes and we head of to the main stage to get ready for the event. In about half an hour, the place full of people and everyone can't wait for the opening ceremony. We took many shots of different groups to show that no matter what races are you, we share the same fun.

We had a fun time there and enjoying ourselves while doing our job, we ended our shooting on 7.30pm.

Week 4: Lead In Lead Out - DONE!

Keree and I spend a lot of time together to figure what would be the best way to create a simple yet great lead in and lead out for the past week. We make some research by looking at different video in youtube and vimeo to find inspiration and she found a great tutorial about making small particles with the wording. I noticed that that effect requires add ons plugin to work but I could not transfer my plugin to Keree's laptop because mine were windows version. She took the initiative to find out another option to create a similar type of effects. I am quite happy with the result she did when she showed to me, after that we sent to Megan and she have chosen the first 2 design as Lead in and Lead out.

Eric gathered us at fashion design room because the Tedx group were working together to solve their footages main problem which is lowlight condition and the footage were grainy and a little distorted. This has given our group an awareness to check carefully the area's lighting condition before we proceed to record. Eric given us final advice, he asked us to be careful anytime when we are outside, when we feel unsafe, just leave it.

So, below are the chosen lead in and lead out for our Darwin Festival video.
